An article ran today in the Observer that highlights the new laws and regulations concerning vehicle registration. Lawmakers have enacted legislation, that thankfully Cumberland County has been slow to comply with, that will make your vehicle property tax due at the same time as your normal vehicle registration renewal. Right now Cumberland County misses out on collecting about $3 million every year from lack of tax collecting enforcement of vehicle taxes.

The observer points out that $3 million is roughly the size of the Parks & Recreation budget. However, the observer fails to mention that the money not collected in taxes probably goes back into the local economy. Vehicle registration and vehicle taxes are simply ways for government to take from one group of people in the name of others. If the government can't properly manage the DMV, do you think that they will probably manage the extra $3 million they hope to collect. Take a stand and oppose new vehicle registration taxes and increased enforcement of such taxes. You can decide how to spend your money better than the government can.
