A U.S. official resigned over the Afghan war last month, saying "I have lost understanding of and confidence in the strategic purposes of the United States' presence in Afghanistan" in a 4-page resignation letter. This resignation is a reason for both applause and concern by Libertarians.
On one hand, it is good to hear that some higher-ranking U.S. officials see the problems with nation-building and continued intervention in Afghanistan.
On the other hand, as President Obama seriously contemplates adding additional troops to the fire, we must be concerned for the service men and women currently in Afghanistan, and those that will be heading there shortly. In Cumberland County, we are all too aware of the cost of both the Iraq and Afghan wars. What started out as a "war of necessity" in Afghanistan has slowly denigrated into a "war with no end in sight."
We must remember the words of John Quincy Adams, "America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to freedom and independence of all. She is the champion and vindicator only of her own."

My article giving an overview of libertarianism appeared in the July issues of the Fayetteville FEED. I give two thumbs up to the FEED's editor, James Johnson, who wanted to give space for political and philosophical discussion in his magazine to celebrate the spirit of the 4th of July. You can read my portion of the article below, but I highly recommend that you also read the full version HERE at the Fayetteville FEED website to see the introduction by James, and the opposing viewpoint in favor of Big Goverment, written by photographer Albert Stichka. This piece was limited for space, so for the next few months I plan to post a series of articles that will cover the many aspects of libertarianism that couldn't be expounded upon in the FEED. Look for them, and send me feedback. -Ash Give us Liberty or Give Us …By Ash Smith
