The Gates Four community is still fighting annexation by Fayetteville. The community has been fighting annexation since 2004, but the City of Fayetteville keeps returning. Why, you may ask? The Gates Four community is a financially well-established community, with high dollar homes, a golf course, and private security. Bigger, more expensive homes mean more property tax revenue. The City of Fayetteville's motivation in this matter is a greedy desire to collect more taxes.

The Gates Four community residents pay for their own utilities, trash collections, etc. and even have settled the problem of policing by having a private security force. The community is interesting similar to what we a Libertarian society would look like. We should support the Gates Four community by writing the press, submitting amicus curiae briefs on their behalf and by engaging local politicians to leave them alone.

Winning elections has never been an easy thing for Libertarians because of the massive party machine of the Republicans and Democrats, and terrible state ballot access laws. But the answer may be to start small. Small towns around Cumberland County are experiencing the economic downturn much worse than Fayetteville. And for anyone that's been following the news, our small town governments are pretty bad (look at Spring Lake getting their police force disolved and look at this article about Linden's Mayor).
