Aberdeen isn't in Cumberland County, but recent news out of the small city should be troubling to Libertarians. The Aberdeen City council voted yesterday to not allow land purchased by Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit group that builds affordable housing for low-income families, to be rezoned from R-2 to R-15 residential housing. This means that the land, which was purchased by the non-profit from the NC Dept. of Transportation, cannot be developed for the type of housing that Habitat builds.

This is important to Libertarians for two reasons:

1) A person or group should be able choose how they use their private property. Habitat purchased the land legally from the DOT, and as such should be able to build whatever they want on the land so long as it doensn't harm others.

2) Libertarians put a large emphasis on using personal charity to replace government welfare. Not allowing a nonprofit group to utilize its resources properly hinders that organization's ability to help others. They are now stuck with land on which they cannot build, meaning that affordable housing for those in need will not be provided anytime soon.

If you live in or around Aberdeen, call to protest the descision.

Newsflash

A North Carolina U.S. Representative has "gutted" Ron Paul's Audit the Fed bill, leaving it incapable of really changing current Fed policy. This is a big issue for NC Libertarians as we start to push for greater government transparency and sound monetary policy. The Cumberland County Libertarian Party encourages anyone in Rep. Mel Watt's district needs to call Watt's office and demand that the bill be restored to its original construction. Read the full story on Lew Rockwell's site, HERE.
