Aberdeen isn't in Cumberland County, but recent news out of the small city should be troubling to Libertarians. The Aberdeen City council voted yesterday to not allow land purchased by Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit group that builds affordable housing for low-income families, to be rezoned from R-2 to R-15 residential housing. This means that the land, which was purchased by the non-profit from the NC Dept. of Transportation, cannot be developed for the type of housing that Habitat builds.
This is important to Libertarians for two reasons:
1) A person or group should be able choose how they use their private property. Habitat purchased the land legally from the DOT, and as such should be able to build whatever they want on the land so long as it doensn't harm others.
2) Libertarians put a large emphasis on using personal charity to replace government welfare. Not allowing a nonprofit group to utilize its resources properly hinders that organization's ability to help others. They are now stuck with land on which they cannot build, meaning that affordable housing for those in need will not be provided anytime soon.
If you live in or around Aberdeen, call to protest the descision.

In October and November, the government spent $292 billion more than it took in, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said. That was even worse than the same period last year, when the government was on its way to posting a record $1.4 trillion deficit for the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30. Read more HERE. |
Quotes
When all government, in little as in great things, shall be drawn to Washington as the Center of all power, it will render powerless the checks provided of one government on another and will become as venal and oppressive as the government from which we separated. -- Thomas Jefferson |
